“Sometimes, the grass is not greener on the other side, and we should stay in the field where we belong. And sometimes we just need to take a gamble and hope for the best.”

If there was a scientific way to find your perfect match, would you send your swab in to find them? The One takes this fantastic premise and looks at how life works out for five people following their match email.

With alternating chapters, we follow Christopher, Nick, Mandy, Ellie, and Jade as they hope for the happily ever after Match your DNA promises. In the vein of a Black Mirror episode, you quickly find things don’t run as smoothly as science claims, especially when your soul mate may be keeping their cards close to their chest.

With The One John Marrs took an intriguing concept and ran with it, using the multiple POV’s to explore the different ways that love can play out, even with the guarantee of being with your one match. In fact, when starting The One I had a few issues with the storyline, and how it may not feel ‘realistic’ enough for me, however within the first few chapters John Marrs answered all my concerns, leaving me free to enjoy the story.

Whilst not all the characters are likable, or well developed, the others more than makeup for it, meaning you will be rooting for at least one character to get their dream scenario. This may be dressed as a romance, but I can assure you this story is for thriller fans in the best possible way. Full of suspense and intrigue this is a book you will not be able to put down, with twists coming right to the very end.
