I really enjoy most of the Blumhouse Production films I have seen,
and there are a great amount on UK Netflix.
So I thought I would give you a rundown of my top 10 that you should watch!
10. The Lazarus Effect
I’m not sure how this film missed my radar considering there is quite a few good actors in it, Mark Duplass (Creep), Olivia Wilde (The Girl Next Door), Donald Glover (Community), Evan Peters (American Horror Story) and Sarah Bolger (The Tudors). I think I skipped it because of the poster, it made it look a little ‘B-movie’ so never found the time, but I am so glad that I finally did!
The Lazarus Effect follows researchers Frank (Duplass)and Zoe (Wilde) as they work on their serum ‘Lazarus’, created to help coma patients, they find it actually brings the dead back to life. Following a successful trial on a dead dog however, they find that the dead don’t quite come back the same.

9. The Belko Experiment
This was another film that I wasn’t too sure I wanted to watch, from what I could gather it looked unnecessarily gory. I decided to give it go though, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Belko Experiment tells the story of an office of block of people being trapped and then told to kill each other for a social experiment. The film has serious ‘Battle Royale’ vibes and I think it managed to offer a great cohesive film despite the large cast number including John C. McGinley (Scrubs), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead).
Oh, and it was barely gory in comparison to Battle Royale 😉

8. Hush
Hush is an home invasion film with a twist, Maddie (Kate Siegel) is deaf-mute. She lives in isolation in the woods with her cat, and some friends that live nearby. One night her idealistic life is threatened when a stranger comes by with insidious intent.
Scream Queen Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House, Oculus) gives a passable display as Maddie, whilst John Gallagher Jr. (The Belko Experiment) gives a truly menacing performance.
The creative ways they play out cat and mouse makes this a on the end of your seat viewing!

7. Creep
Not for the last time, we have Mark Duplass on this list, it seems that him and Blumhouse productions have a beautiful relationship.
Creep is the wonderfully creepy tale (see what I did there?) of Aaron (Patrick Brice) a videographer who answers an online ad to record a message for the dying Josef (Duplass).
Whilst slightly strange at first, Josef’s behaviour gets more and more concerning, leaving Aaron scared for his life.

6. Insidious
The start of the franchise, although the third chronologically. Whilst Insidious has a bit of a crazy storyline and almost feels as though it is two halves on different scripts put together, it is fun and entertaining.
Josh (Patrick Wilson – The Conjuring) and Renai (Rose Byrne – 28 Weeks Later) move into a new home with their family, two boys and a baby girl. Not long after the move, their son Dalton falls into a coma with no explanation following an accident. The family is then plunged into a world of ghosts, demons and astral projections.

5. The Purge: Anarchy
The Purge: Anarchy is the second in The Purge franchise and follows a very different tone from the first.
Anarchy follows a few groups of people as their paths cross on Purge night, each with their own individual reasons for being out in the open on this night!
Whilst the first film is set in one house with one family, Anarchy takes a greater look at Los Angeles, and the lengths that some people will go to. The story brings more of The Purge politics into the forefront, setting the path for the next film The Purge: Election Year.

4. Split
The second instalment in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy, Split stars James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class), newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Betty Buckley (Carrie).
Kevin (McAvoy) is a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder, with his 23 different personalities in conflict with each other. One day Kevin kidnaps 3 young girls whilst his Dennis personality is in charge seemingly to appease the mysterious The Beast!
McAvoy makes a fantastic job at switching between the personalities in a honest and believable way, that alone makes this film worth a watch.

3. Creep 2
What can I say about Creep 2? It takes the fantastic foundation laid by Creep and just runs with it.
Josef (Duplass) returns under a different name, yet again putting up online ad’s to find a videographer, this time offering $1,000 to record him for a day . Sara (Desiree Akhaven – The Miseducation of Cameron Post) responds to the ad, thinking it will be a great addition to her YouTube series Encounters.
Sara’s fearlessness takes Josef by surprise, perhaps he has found his match?

2. Get Out
If you haven’t heard of Get Out, where have you been? Jorden Peele’s directorial debut, Get Out was a run away success earning nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, and the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya – Black Mirror) and Rose Armitage (Allison Williams – Girls), an interracial couple are on their way to Rose’s family home to meet her parents (Catherine Keener – The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Bradley Whitford – The West Wing) and brother. Upon arriving Chris becomes unnerved by the behaviour of the Armitage’s black maid and groundskeeper. Things get stranger and stranger as time passes, making Chris feel uncomfortable and questioning everything.

1. Cam
If you haven’t watched this film yet, cancel whatever you had planned after this post and watch it! I watched this psychological horror the weekend it was added to Netflix (November 2018) and I still think about it to this day.
Cam tells the story of Alice Ackerman (Madeline Brewer – The Handmaid’s Tale) who earns a living as Lola on a cam site. Obsessed with hitting the top ranking on the site, Lola enjoys her job and relishes in coming up with new shows to maximise her viewers. Everything is going great until one day Alice is logged out of her account, frustrated she logs in on her dummy account to find that she is currently streaming… live!
Wondering how a doppelganger is using her account Alice is about to go down the rabbit hole to discover that nothing online is private.
