“Six thousand years ago, Tani walks where no foot has ever stepped before…”
Angela McAllister shares seven original stories set on one hillside, spanning six thousand years in this illustrated middle grade with heart!

Overall
We meet the titular hillside six thousand years ago as a neolithic clan starts to question whether things can change beyond how they’ve always been done! Leaving behind an arrowhead, it is discovered by a small Roman boy some time into the future, and so on, bringing us to our modern day. Each family discovers something new about the hillside, thanks in part to that which was left by those before. Once Upon a Hillside by Angela McAllister showcases the wonder of the ever-changing British landscape through these interconnected stories that take you on a historical tour.
Illustrations
Angela McAllisters atmospheric writing is beautifully complimented by Chiara Fedele’s stunning illustrations which capture the essence of the hillside landscape. The wilderness, history, weather, and even folklore are brought to life by the full-colour illustrations which grace each page. Completing the beautiful collection of illustrations are some double-page spreads at the beginning of each short story which visually show the changing hillside.

Final Thoughts
This book was so enjoyable to read, I found myself often staring at the illustrations as I read. My son is slightly young to appreciate this book (or to sit still longer than 2 pages), but I cannot wait to read this to him in a year or so. I especially look forward to exploring the illustrated animal and plant glossary at the back with him!
